Roche Diagnostics Africa and the African Society for Laboratory Medicine have launched a three-year programme aimed at strengthening laboratory leadership and improving access to quality diagnostic services in Africa. The initiative will be implemented in collaboration with health ministries, technical experts and academic institutions.

  • The programme, known as Leadership Excellence for African Diagnostics (LEAD), will offer context-specific training, opportunities for regional collaboration and development of a pan-African curriculum with an academic partner, specific to each country.

  • Strengthening diagnostics and lab leadership equips African health systems to detect climate-sensitive diseases, adapt locally, maintain core services during climate shocks and generate data linking environmental change to public health outcomes.

With nearly 30 roles in care delivery, public health strategy and institutional support, the listings indicate deeper localisation and health equity goals. Aga Khan Hospital in Kenya leads with the most new positions.

  • Kenya and South Africa continue to dominate the job market. Emerging roles, such as Child Health Immunisation Advisor in Zambia, Office Doctor in Angola and various community-based positions with Médecins Sans Frontières in Nigeria, indicate increased investment in primary care, maternal health and outreach in vulnerable regions.

  • Additional openings in Uganda, Namibia, Cameroon and Rwanda highlight the broader demand for patient support, diagnostics, and regulatory skills within decentralised health systems and humanitarian settings.

Swiss multinational Roche has seen substantial workforce expansion in Africa over the past year, with its employee count reported on LinkedIn increasing by 20% to a total of 2,074. Its most rapid growth has been in Ivory Coast, where the team grew by 40%. One of the reasons is Roche’s cancer programme, in partnership with the World Health Organization.

  • Launched in September 2023, the initiative aims to enhance early detection, diagnosis and treatment. In Ivory Coast, services are integrated into existing clinics, with trained health workers screening and treating at the primary healthcare level.

  • Roche’s growth in Africa resulted in 444 new hires alongside 75 recorded departures, leading to a net increase of 369 staff. South Africa remains Roche’s largest hub on the continent, accounting for 32% of the workforce.
